Most-Awarded Artist Dan Smyers Earns Five
Chris Janson, Ashley McBryde Score First-Ever ACM Wins
It was a winning night at the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards for Warner Music Nashville artists – in more ways than one. WMN artists took home seven awards, the most since the company came under the leadership and direction of Chairman and CEO, John Esposito, in 2009.
Reba herself re-named the ceremony “Dan + Shay’s Excellent Adventure,” with the duo taking home three awards and Dan Smyers earning five. The Multi-Platinum, chart-topping global hit “Tequila” earned the duo and their producer Scott Hendricks Song and Single of the Year awards early in the evening. The GRAMMY-winners also took home the title of Duo of the Year after performing their larger-than-life duet “Keeping Score” with pop superstar Kelly Clarkson. Dan + Shay (Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) released a special acoustic version of the song last night following the show (listen HERE).
“This is all so incredible and surreal,” said Smyers. “Honestly, we’re still just fans. Just to get invited to the show is an honor and a dream come true. We’re beyond thankful and still trying to process it all. We moved to Nashville to write country music and to be part of this family and have everyone come to Vegas is the coolest thing in the world. We are all winners tonight.”
First-time winner Chris Janson was surprised backstage with a Video of the Year award for his poignant hit “Drunk Girl,” which was recently certified Gold by the RIAA. New Female Artist of the Year winner Ashley McBryde, who received the news about her award from Carrie Underwood prior to the show (watch HERE), brought the crowd to their feet with her performances. The Washington Post called her performance of current single “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” a “moment of triumph” naming it one of their six best moments of the night. Blake Shelton added a standout performance of his current single “God’s Country,” co-written by label-mate Devin Dawson, before McBryde returned to the stage alongside Eric Church for a duet of “The Snake.” In addition,Cole Swindell, Michael Ray and Hunter Hayes joined in the celebration as presenters during the show.
“Holy shit! I could light a lightbulb with the palm of my hand based on the energy in that room,” said McBryde. “Not only could you feel at as a performer on stage, but it was even insane being seated in the audience.”
“I am beyond thankful and humbled to receive my very first ACM Award, especially for a song that means so much to me,” added Janson. “I’d like to give a special thanks to Shane Tarleton, Mike Dupree and Jeff Venable for making it possible.”
