“Magazines” and “Paper Doll” Featured in Exclusive Multi-Platform Roll Out with CMT Beginning Tomorrow, August 11
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (August 10, 2017) – Recently handpicked for Cosmopolitan’s “7 Women of Country Music” feature, Atlantic Records / Warner Music Nashville recording artist Aubrie Sellers is releasing a pair of music videos with a strong current of female empowerment. Sitting at a faux drive-in movie theater at Disney World watching clips of 50s and 60s sci-fi, Sellers was struck by the outdated way women were portrayed and decided to use her own music to flip the concepts. Sellers collaborated with Los Angeles based director Millicent Hailes on the clips that will begin rolling out on all CMT platforms Friday, August 11.
“I was inspired by these old films to take the female characters and modernize them and rewrite these stories with some girl power,” said Sellers. “On my debut album, I wrote a lot about women and their roles in society…it’s something that I think about a lot and will probably continue to write about on my next album."
Part 1 is set to “Magazines,” a track CMT described as casting “a sarcastic eye on celebrity culture." The movie inspiration comes from the 1957 film Funny Face starring Audrey Hepburn and tells the story of a shy bookshop clerk pressured into becoming a model. With lyrics that speak to the pressures women feel to look and act a certain way by the media, Sellers knew “Magazines” would be the perfect song to showcase the updated idea.
Inspired by the 1953 sci-fi flick Cat Women of the Moon, the second video is set to “Paper Doll,” described by Billboard as having a “crude, fuzzy…proto-punk” sound. With lyrics like “All you are is a paper doll / Cardboard cutout / Just like all the rest of them / That don't know how to stand out / From that one-trick crowd,” this particular track best described the movie’s race of ‘Cat-Women’ who all look identical to each other. Part 2 will be available Friday, August 18.

The critically praised garage-country pioneer began the year trading between Miranda Lambert’s “Highway Vagabond” and The Cadillac Three’s “Black Roses” tours. She was also recently featured in Elle magazine’s “Women In Music” issue alongside other female artists making waves in the industry such as Oscar-nominated singer and actress Hailee Steinfeld, songwriter and streaming sensation Julia Michaels and up-and-coming pop/R&B diva Lizzo. Praised for her “rebel spirit” (Rolling Stone) and the “Southern-rock muscle behind her gentle voice” (The New York Times), Sellers’ debut record received rave reviews upon its release. Cosmopolitan Magazine explained the album’s main message as “a thudding, rock-tinged tale of growing up and heading out on your own, complete with a biting critique of today’s beauty – and boy-obsessed culture,” while The New York Post praised its “exciting injection of grit and aggression.”
