NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (August 18, 2017) – With last Friday’s premiere of her brand new cinema-inspired music video series, Atlantic Records / Warner Music Nashville recording artist Aubrie Sellers “has taken her role as role model to the next level” (CMT). And so she has – creating a pair of videos steeped in female empowerment alongside Los Angeles-based director Millicent Hailes. Introduced last Friday, the second part of the series premieres today across all CMT platforms and continues to flip the perspective on the role of women in media.
Inspired by the 1953 sci-fi flick Cat Women of the Moon, this week’s video is set to “Paper Doll,” described by Billboard as having a “crude, fuzzy…proto-punk” sound. Nashville Scene declared that the track “mocks shallow beauty standards with admirable defiance” while Wide Open Country offered praise for “crystal clear vocals” combined with “gritty rock music.” With lyrics like “All you are is a paper doll / Cardboard cutout / Just like all the rest of them / That don't know how to stand out / From that one-trick crowd,” this particular track best described the movie’s race of ‘Cat-Women’ who all look identical to each other.
The first part of the series drew inspiration from the 1957 film Funny Face starring Audrey Hepburn as a shy bookshop clerk who is pressured into becoming a model. Sellers paired her revamped interpretation with the critical-eyed song “Magazines,” applauded by Rolling Stone with just one word: “blistering.” Check out the video along with a closer look at the making of the series here.
The critically praised garage-country pioneer began the year trading between Miranda Lambert’s “Highway Vagabond” and The Cadillac Three’s “Black Roses” tours. She will head overseas in September alongside singer/songwriter Dylan LeBlanc for shows across the United Kingdom and Ireland (dates listed below). Sellers was recently handpicked for Cosmopolitan’s “7 Women of Country Music” feature and was also featured in Elle magazine’s “Women In Music” issue alongside other female artists making waves in the industry such as Oscar-nominated singer and actress Hailee Steinfeld, songwriter and streaming sensation Julia Michaels and up-and-coming pop/R&B diva Lizzo.
Praised for her “rebel spirit” (Rolling Stone) and the “Southern-rock muscle behind her gentle voice” (The New York Times), Sellers’ debut record received rave reviews upon its release. Cosmopolitan Magazine explained the album’s main message as “a thudding, rock-tinged tale of growing up and heading out on your own, complete with a biting critique of today’s beauty – and boy-obsessed culture,” while The New York Post praised its “exciting injection of grit and aggression.”
